After changing out the front idler axle hubs to a more common size wheel seal, I decided to pull the drums off the back and take a look. I really didn't like what I saw; oddly worn pads, rusted springs, auto adjuster, etc..

Once again I bugged my neighbor that works at Dexter Axle to get me a quote on replacement drums and an entire axle assembly minus springs and lug nuts.

189 bucks for a complete drum brake axle..240 for disc brakes! Looks like I am going to take the high road and put disc brakes on my 1997 Boat Mate trailer. I am excited to start the project, but might hold off for the big "W". Anyone else done this before? Curious to know if there is any snags I am fixing to jump into.

I looked up this article I had remembered reading:

http://www.trailerboats.com/output.cfm?ID=1246015

So, will you be removing the new parts you just bought for the front axle? I didn't realize you had drums when I read your other post. Do you have to buy a new actuator?

Chris, nice trailer! My winter project is going to be getting my trailer up to snuff and it needs everything! I have a 192 so I'm glad to see the pic of yours unladen. If you have a moment can you please measure your axle for me? My boat will not sit down between the wheels and I'd like to get it lower for better towing and loading.
I emailed BoatMate for some info and they weren't any help.
Thanks

Dr. Evil Wink
I have drum brakes on my trailer and can't stand them.
I'd really like to change mine over to disc and at that price I would easily do it.
When you start, can you keep some detailed notes on parts, where to get them and the process. This would be a good project for me to do during the hard water season.
Looking forward to your updates.

RQ,MY THE STRAIGHT AXLE OLD TRAILER IS 84 1/2" AND THE TORSION AXLE ON THE NEW ONE IS ABOUT 82 1/4" I CAN'T REMEMBER THE MEASUREMENT BETWEEN THE FENDERS AND CAN'T GET WITH THE BOAT ON. I DO HAVE A COUPLE PICS SHOWING HOW TIGHT THE FIT IS.

MY OLD TRAILER IS 80 1/2 " AND I HAD AT LEAST AN INCH CLEARANCE ON EACH SIDE. THE NEW ONE HAS LESS THAN 1/2" TOTAL CLEARANCE.
THE FIRST FEW TIMES I RETRIEVED THE BOAT WAS A PAIN TO GET ON W/OUT SETTING ON TOP OF THE FENDER.
BROUGHT IT IN TO BOATMATE FOR SOME WARRANTY WORK DURING THE HOMECOMING THIS YEAR AND FOUND OUT THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE ABOUT THE FENDER SITUATION. I'VE LEARNED TO ADJUST THE TRAILER DEPTH AND HAS MADE IT EASIER LOADING.
I DEBATED DOING A REVAMP ON THE TRAILER,FOR A MINUTE OR TWO, OPTED TO GET THE NEW ONE WITH THE HIGHER WEIGHT RATING AND ALL THE OTHER GOODIES. WE TRAILER ALOT OF MILES WITH A GOOD SIZE LOAD, FEEL MUCH SAFER.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR REHAB,

Will do! I have the advantage though, I am getting my parts with my neighbor's employee discount which is a HUGE help. I think I will wait for the white stuff to start as well, but will get the axle next week so I will have it.. Heck, I just might take the discs off and drop them off at the nearest cryogenics lab too for grins and giggles.

No. I have a tandem axle trailer, I put the hubs on the idler axle. I think if I have to replace anything will be the master cylinder or atleast rebuild it if I get lucky enough.

Chris,
Thanks for the info. If my trailer were not galvanized I could do all the fab work myself but I don't want to get into putting non galvanized parts on this trailer so for now I'm stuck deciding what to do.
What weight rating did you move up to and what was the old one? I pull equipment trailers all the time and I am just not used to all of the movement back there. This is the heaviest boat I've owned and I don't think it's a good fit for this trailer.
